What is Optomap?
Optomap is an innovative retinal imaging technology that allows for comprehensive and detailed visualisation of the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Unlike most camera’s found at high street practices that only capture 15% of the retina, this advanced imaging system captures a wide-field view of 82% of the retina in a single, non-invasive scan.
Benefits of Optomap:
1. Comprehensive Retinal Imaging:
- Provides a panoramic view of up to 200 degrees of the retina.
- Captures detailed images, enabling early detection of various eye conditions.
2. Quick and Non-invasive:
- Requires no dilation in many cases, making it more convenient than traditional methods.
- Takes only a few seconds to generate a high-resolution image.
3. Early Disease Detection:
- Helps in the early diagnosis of eye conditions like diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and more.
- Facilitates timely intervention and treatment, potentially preventing vision loss or complications.
4. Patient Education and Monitoring:
- Enables healthcare professionals to educate patients by showing them their own retinal images.
- Allows for comparison of images over time to track any changes in eye health.
What does it involve?
Optomap involves a straightforward and non-invasive imaging process:
- Patients sit comfortably and place their chin on a rest while looking into the device.
- The Optomap camera captures a high-resolution, wide-field image of the retina, often without the need for pupil dilation.
- The captured images are immediately available for analysis and discussion with the healthcare provider.
Who is it suitable for?
Optomap is beneficial for individuals of all ages, particularly those:
- With a family history of eye diseases.
- Managing systemic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, or other health issues affecting the eyes.
- Requiring routine eye exams to monitor eye health or assess changes in vision.
- Averse to pupil dilation or uncomfortable with traditional eye examination methods.
Optomap is an excellent addition to comprehensive eye examinations and has proven to be an invaluable tool in early disease detection and management.
Always consult with an eye care professional to determine if Optomap imaging is suitable for your specific eye care needs.
Optomap represents a significant advancement in eye care technology, providing a more efficient, comfortable, and comprehensive way to assess and monitor retinal health.
Optomap is included as part of our Gold Eye examination and our iCare Plan. Optomap is currently available in Dorking, Godalming, Haslemere and Virginia Water.
