Myopia is known as short sightedness and the condition is rising across the world. Ongoing studies have shown that by 2050, more than 50% of the global population will be myopic.
Children who are more at risk are those who:
- Have a family history of myopia
- Study for prolonged periods of time doing close up work
- Consistently use computers and digital devices
- Do not spend enough time outdoors
- Are from particular ethnic backgrounds
Many people are aware that glasses and contact lenses can be worn to make us see better but with research and development, there are now plenty of options that have been designed to slow down the progression of myopia in children.
By slowing down children’s progression of myopia, it can reduce the risk of developing several eye conditions such as retinal detachment, myopic maculopathy, glaucoma and cataracts but it can also impact a child’s quality of life when they are dependent on the best vision for sport and to be able to fully participate in school activities.
The products that we can offer your child are Stellest spectacle lenses, MiSight Contact lenses and Ortho-k.
Stellest lenses: work by using H.A.L.T Technology (Highly Aspherical Lenslets Target). Each lens has 1021 lenslets that are distributed as a constellation and are spread out over 11 concentric rings. The design has been created to slow down the elongation of the eye whilst correcting vision.
MiSight Contact Lenses: use ActivControl Technology. This special design provides clear vision whilst reducing the signal telling the eye to grow too long. They’re soft, daily disposable lenses that are worn during the day and are ideal for active children.
Ortho-K Contact Lenses (also known as Orthokeratology): are a firmer RGP lens design that are worn overnight. This means that the wearer is lens and glasses free during the day. They gently and temporarily reshape the cornea whilst allowing oxygen to pass through to keep the eyes comfortable and healthy. If the lenses are not worn, then the cornea returns to it’s original shape within a day or two.
