What is Ortho-K?
Orthokeratology (Ortho-K), also known as corneal reshaping therapy or overnight vision correction, is a non-surgical method used to correct vision problems like myopia (short sightedness), astigmatism, and in some cases, hyperopia (far sightedness). It involves the use of specially designed contact lenses that are worn overnight. These lenses gently reshape the cornea, the front surface of the eye, temporarily correcting vision so that clear sight can be maintained throughout the day without the need for glasses or contact lenses.
Benefits of Ortho-K
- Reduced Dependence on Corrective Eyewear: Ortho-K allows individuals to experience clear vision during the day without the need for glasses or daytime contact lenses.
- Control of Myopia Progression: Some studies suggest that Ortho-K might slow down the progression of myopia, particularly in children.
- Enhanced Peripheral Vision: Improved peripheral vision compared to traditional glasses or contact lenses.
- Suitable for Various Lifestyles: Ideal for individuals involved in sports or occupations where wearing glasses can be inconvenient.
What does it involve?
- Consultation and Fitting: A qualified eye care professional conducts a comprehensive eye exam to determine the suitability of Ortho-K. If deemed suitable, custom-made lenses are fitted to suit the shape of the individual’s eyes.
- Wearing the Lenses: The specially designed contact lenses are worn overnight during sleep. The lenses gently reshape the cornea, correcting vision.
- Regular Check-ups: Follow-up visits are necessary to ensure the lenses fit properly and to monitor eye health.
Who is it suitable for?
Ortho-K is suitable for individuals who:
- Have Myopia, Astigmatism, or Hyperopia: Ortho-K can correct these refractive errors.
- Seek Alternatives to Eyeglasses or Daily Contact Lenses: Particularly beneficial for those involved in sports or professions where wearing glasses can be limiting.
- Are Willing to Comply with Care Instructions: Proper lens care and regular follow-ups are essential for success and eye health.
- Children and Teens: Ortho-K can be an option for myopic children or teenagers to potentially slow the progression of myopia.
However, not everyone is a suitable candidate for Ortho-K. Factors such as eye health, corneal shape, and personal lifestyle need to be assessed by one of our specialist optometrists.
Ortho-keratology can provide freedom from daytime glasses or contact lenses, but it requires commitment to wearing the lenses as prescribed and maintaining good eye hygiene.
